"always be creating"

- Jesse Karjalainen

Who is Jesse Karjalainen?

I built this website as a hub for all of my creative outlets.

It took less than 2 months to have my first book, 'The Joy of English', accepted for publication. (This was soon after I gave up looking for an agent.) That first book came out in hardback in 2011. A global publisher then acquired my small publisher. And then it changed hands again. And we pretty much lost contact. On the books, I am an author signed with Hachette.

Since that first book, I have written 10 more.

Jesse Karjalainen Author.
I write books around three central themes: The English language, History and Scandinavia. So far I have published 11 full-length books.

They way I work is to typically be working on 4-5 book projects at any one time. One of thes will always be the one that is due to be finished next.

My latest book is "Thor's Day - Untangling the real history, art and language of   Viking Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon Britain". It is due out in January 2024.
Jesse Karjalainen Photographer.
I specialise in studio work: portraits, commercial, fashion, product and narrative jewellery photography. I work from my own studio and have sold around 25,000 photos to date.
Jesse Karjalainen Illustrator.
I started doing illustration for fun when I had a small child and was unable to have the head space to write. I specialise in technical illustrations and maps. My tool of choice is Illustrator. I don't use a Wacom or even a mouse. Believe it or not, all my work is done using the trackpad on my Macbook. This way, I can illustrate anywhere. Even while watching TV.

Jesse Karjalainen Podcaster and Youtuber.
I am by no means an influencer whatsoever. Instead, I am still finding my true north when it comes to Youtube and podcasting. You have to try and fail in order to succeed. I have some exciting new projects lined up in 2024 on the video front, so come back another time.

Jesse's reading list 2024

As you can see, I love to read and I love to write. I try to read 50 books a year. "How do you find time," people ask me. It's easy to find time for the things you love doing. Writing is easy, so is reading. But I should find time to exercise more. That is hard.
